Project Summary

The new Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home did start off well. The original retirement home, which was undergoing a $4 million to $5 million renovation, burned to the ground during construction, despite the efforts of firefighters from Cooperstown and 11 other departments. Fire inspectors later determined the blaze had been ignited by a propane space heater in the basement. Soon after the fire, the chairperson of the home’s board of directors, vowed that a new home would be built. They hired Welliver to restore the facility and hope for their project.

According to Patricia Donnelly, designer, the Thanksgiving Home’s administrator, the facility was re-designed to provide three levels of modern resident units, private bathrooms, wide corridors, a beauty parlor, a library, an exercise therapy room and an activity and game room. The new Thanksgiving Home accommodates 26 residents.

The project involved historical reconstruction of the original fabric as well as an addition to create a 38,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art assisted care facility. Welliver provided continuous project updates, were on site and accessible to both the design team and owner, and managed an aggressive schedule to replace the lost establishment quickly.
