Project Summary

Construction recently began on the Binghamton City School District’s MacArthur Elementary School, a brand new 130,000 sf facility being built to replace the previous school after it was destroyed by major flooding in 2011. With the possibility for future area-wide flooding, the building’s design features three elevated classroom "pods" or wings constructed on stilts, all connected to the main building which will be constructed on a raised grade above the flood plain and surrounded by a large retaining wall. The building will feature modern learning spaces, state-of-the-art security, and is designed to be a net zero energy facility - complete with geothermal systems, photovoltaic panels, and other high efficiency mechanical systems - all of which will be available to students upon completion in November 2015.
