Corning Alternative School for Math and Science

Project Info

Name: School Expansion Project

Client: Corning Alternative School for Math and Science (ASMS)

Location: Corning, New York

Project Summary

The 2012 expansion project at the Alternative School for Math & Science (ASMS) in Corning, New York, a private school which serves students grade six through eight, was the first in the school’s history. A new 38,000 square-foot addition more than doubled the size of the existing school and helped remedy the lack of space for science, music, art and physical education. Environmental efficiencies were a key element in the design. Waste in the cafeteria is separated for recycling and composting as part of the student curriculum, and green infrastructure techniques, such as rain gardens, rain barrels, and permeable pavers to decrease storm water runoff and promote infiltration at the source, were also used. The project was completed in just fourteen months, two months ahead of schedule, and the expansion increased the school’s capacity by 50 percent. ASMS can now serve 135 students per year in an environment that is a direct application of their STEM education.
