Project Summary

The new ER Addition was a complete transformation and upgrade from the existing ER admittance area, which was becoming too small and inefficient. The intent was not only to relieve some of the pressure of an increase in ER patients, but to also modern finishes and technologies that will grow with the hospital’s future needs.

Welliver on-site team managed the project, which included an addition of more trauma rooms, fast-track patient rooms, an expanded waiting and admittance area and isolation/decontamination rooms. Separate entrances for walk-in patients and patients brought via ambulance were built and a garage to house two paramedic vehicles was added. Exam and x-ray technology was installed to allow for more efficient ER procedures. A brick and slate façade was used to match the rest of the existing building, which was built in the early 1920’s. Traffic, parking and ambulance bays were re-routed upon completion of the entrance. The first floor houses fourteen patient beds; separate reception, registration, and patient discharge areas; two triage beds; an expanded waiting room and vending area; trauma rooms; isolation and decontamination rooms; separate ED entrances for walk-in patients and patients brought via ambulance; and a garage to house two paramedic vehicles.

The project team coordinated utility tie-ins to the existing building without affecting daily business. Cleanliness and noise reduction was particularly important because construction was occurring next to the fully-occupied hospital areas. The project also included a second floor of swing space that would allow the hospital to further expand, housing a new same-day surgery unit, which Welliver is currently managing.

FACT

The ER Expansion Project celebrated its ribbon-cutting in January 2012 and Welliver is currently working on the second-floor swing space project.
