Project Summary

The three-story facility houses administrative and student services as well as a ground-level, 10,000 square-foot Innovation Center. The design and construction team had to combine two dissimilar environments - student and faculty needs, which they did by creating a transparent area that was multi-functional and provided opportunities for collaboration, innovation and communication. This is a certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum project, one of only two in Upstate New York under the USGBC's (United States Green Building Council) LEED v2.2 standards. The Welliver project team came in $1.5 million under budget and delivered the project one month ahead of schedule - May 2009 - allowing the users to move in sooner and provide students with additional space.

Welliver commissioned artist Nancy Gong to create a 45-foot long, curved glass art wall that sectioned the Student Innovation Center from the rest of the building without closing in the space. Additional highlights of the four-star lobby include a water wall, a woven bamboo wall and Venetian plaster and stonework finishes. All of the furniture is made of bamboo, a rapidly renewable resource. The building is comprised of 43,000 square feet of office space, housing Financial Aid, Graduate Studies and Student Services, hosts an open-air design and global technology and communications capabilities.

Sustainability highlights include: a 48.6 percent energy cost reduction over industry standards for heating and cooling efficiency; 43 percent reduction in water usage over national requirements for fixture performance; 35 percent of the building's electricity is supplied from renewable sources, including on-site solar photovoltaic panels; and 33 percent recycled content of materials were used in construction.
