In response to the University’s growing need for student living space and modernized facilities, Welliver was challenged with expanding the West Campus to cater to an additional number of students and faculty. Careful planning was the key in building the multi-story dormitory facilities, recreation center, and modern dining halls while ensuring student life activities continued without interruption in the existing facilities surrounding the area.
West Campus includes five “houses” that feature single and double-occupancy rooms, faculty offices, lounges and common areas. Combining commercial dining with residential, a large dining hall was incorporated into the plan to offer West Campus residents additional dining facilities in a modern and comfortable setting. This residential initiative enhances the undergraduate experience by fostering smaller communities, creating casual learning spaces, and integrating living and learning in one environment. Integrating sustainability, this project is the first LEED Certified building on Cornell’s campus.
