Guthrie Healthcare’s new greenfield replacement hospital was the resounding answer to the Corning community’s need for a wider array of technologically-advanced healthcare services. Several years of development and two years of construction culminated into a hospital with 65 private patient rooms, a state-of-the-art operating room suite, on-site helipad, a modern emergency department with 18 treatment areas, and an attached 18,000 square-foot fully-integrated cancer treatment center.
The relocation to a green field site was a major decision in the development of the project as the new site satisfies the need for accessibility, convenience for regional patients, and the need for ample parking and multiple drop-off entrances.
Welliver was selected as Construction Manager in a joint venture, chosen in part due to our team’s previous successes in meeting tight deadlines. Providing a constant presence and leadership out in the field, our superintendents quickly became an authority for timely solutions to issues, which built trust and confidence with the project subcontractors. When critical path activities – including foundations, slab placement, and steel erection – were pushed into winter conditions and threatened the schedule, our Welliver team brought all owner representatives and subcontractors together and developed enabling measures that allowed work to continue with other trades. Due to their quick thinking, teamwork, and constant communication, the project team was able to deliver the landmark new hospital on time and under budget.
